The Cheltenham 2022 opener is shaping up to be one of the races of the Festival and Supreme Novices' Hurdle tips will vary greatly as the likes of Constitution Hill, Dysart Dynamo and Jonbon all hold strong claims.

Appreciate It was the first favourite to triumph in this race for the past six renewals so it is often a tricky puzzle for punters placing their bets with the best horse racing betting sites. Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Runners in Focus

Here's an in-depth look at the potential contenders for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle:

Constitution Hill

The Nicky Henderson-trained five-year-old is unbeaten in two starts at Sandown and shot to the top of Supreme Novices' Hurdle odds lists following a 12-length victory in the Tolworth Hurdle last time.

Sent off the 2/5 favourite that day, the EUR120,000 purchase showed an impressive turn of foot despite the heavy ground to defeat Jetoile easily.

There are very few negatives attached to Constitution Hill but a slightly worrying statistic is that both of the previous Tolworth Hurdle winners that Nicky Henderson ran in this race finished unplaced.

Nico De Boinville was full of praise following his victory last time and connections will be hoping he can emulate both Altior and Shishkin, who won this for the same jockey/trainer combination.

Jonbon

The unbeaten Jonbon was always going to have a big reputation being a brother of two-time Cheltenham Festival winner Douvan but his purchase price of EUR570,000 at the Goffs Sale does look justified at this stage.

The six-year-old won a Newbury bumper in March last year before an impressive win on hurdling debut in November under Aidan Coleman. He followed up in the Grade 2 Kennel Gate Novices’ Hurdle at Ascot, defeating Colonel Mustard by 2¾ lengths before defying a 5lb penalty to win at Haydock last time.

That was his least impressive performance to date but he still managed to win by three lengths at the finish despite sweating in the preliminaries. It did seem to highlight a ceiling on his ability though, and Constitution Hill looks to be the stable first string at present.

2022 Supreme Novices' Hurdle Tip: Dysart Dynamo

The Willie Mullins-trained six-year-old is unbeaten on all four of his starts under rules. Despite occupying the head of the ante-post market for Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle betting for most of the season, I do think Dysart Dynamo will and should head to this race instead.

He won his two bumpers by a combination of 16 lengths last season before making a winning hurdling debut at Cork in December by 19 lengths under Sean O’Keefe. Dysart Dynamo won the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle last time by 19 lengths to emulate stablemates Vautour, Douvan, Min and Getabird who all came to this race after.

Both Vautour and Douvan were successful, Min bumped into Altior and we subsequently found out that Getabird needed to go right-handed to show his best, so this is obviously a race that the trainer targets with his leading hope.

For those reasons, Dysart Dynamo tops our Supreme Novices' Hurdle tips list.

Kilcruit

Kilcruit spent the summer as ante-post Supreme Novices' Hurdle betting favourite following some smart bumper form but he faces a lot of question marks after defeats at 1/14 and 4/9 on his first two starts over hurdles.

He was obviously closely matched with Sir Gerhard based on bumper form but seemed to lack his usual spark when defeated on his first two starts this season.

He got off the mark over hurdles last time at Punchestown in a first time tongue-tie, beating Bold Approach by 21 lengths, but it would take a brave punter to back him for this race given his form this season, so we're steering clear of him in our Supreme Novices' Hurdle tips.

Mighty Potter

Mighty Potter has the option of both the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle and it will be interesting to see which way connections go.

The five-year-old won a Punchestown bumper last year before winning a maiden hurdle by 29 lengths on his reappearance at Down Royal. He was slightly disappointing when only third in the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse in November but bounced back to win the Grade 1 Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown at Christmas, beating stablemate Three Stripe Life by 1½ lengths under Jack Kennedy.

He looks a big staying chaser for the future but showed last time that he has enough pace for this two-mile trip - and is one to be respected here.

• 14 of the last 16 winners had won their previous start.
• 8 of the previous 10 winners had previously won at least a Grade 2 hurdle.
• 11 of the last 13 winners had run at least 4 times over hurdles but not the last two winners who had only run 3 times each.
• No horse wearing headgear has won since 1992.
• Champagne Fever (2013) is the only Champion Bumper winner to win the race since 1993 with 5 of the last 6 who tried being beaten at less than 9/1.
• The two Nicky Henderson Tolworth winners who ran in this finished unplaced.
• Willie Mullins has won the race a record six times.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Verdict

There is still an element of ‘Willie Mullins Bingo’ in this race but I really like the chances of DYSART DYNAMO at 11/4 with FansBet in the Festival opener. He has been wildly impressive on all of his four career starts to date and could provide his trainer with a record eighth win in the race.

This year’s renewal of the Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle wasn’t as strong as many but the style of his 19-length success was extremely impressive and I think it will take a good one to pass him. Both the Nicky Henderson-trained pair Constitution Hill and Jonbon are respected but could find themselves too far back in the field and I expect Dysart Dynamo to make all.
